Fluoxetine: What to know before you start
Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used to treat depression, anxiety, OCD, bulimia and panic disorder. How it works, side effects, cost and what to expect.
Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, or SSRI. It's one of the most commonly prescribed antidepressants in the US.
What fluoxetine treats
Doctors prescribe fluoxetine for:
- Major depressive disorder
- Generalized anxiety disorder
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Bulimia nervosa
- Panic disorder
- Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)
How fluoxetine works
Fluoxetine increases serotonin levels in your brain. Serotonin regulates mood, sleep and appetite. When serotonin is low, symptoms of depression and anxiety often follow. By blocking the reabsorption of serotonin, fluoxetine keeps more of it active in your system.
Side effects
Common side effects include:
- Nausea
- Headache
- Insomnia
- Sexual dysfunction
- Dry mouth
- Tremor
Most side effects improve within 2 to 4 weeks as your body adjusts.
Cost and insurance
Fluoxetine is a generic medication, so it's affordable. Most insurance plans cover it. You can expect to pay between 10 and 40 dollars per month without insurance.
Getting fluoxetine through telehealth
You can obtain a fluoxetine prescription through telehealth. A clinician will review your medical history and symptoms via video or phone, then send your prescription to a pharmacy of your choice.
