What is sublingual immunotherapy and how does it work
Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) is a tablet or liquid placed under the tongue to treat allergies by gradually desensitizing your immune system. Learn how it works and what to expect.
Sublingual immunotherapy, or SLIT, is an allergy treatment that works by placing a tablet or liquid under your tongue. Over time, it gradually desensitizes your immune system to specific allergens like pollen, dust mites or pet dander.
Unlike allergy shots, which require office visits, SLIT tablets stay at home. You take them daily, usually starting before allergy season and continuing through it. The treatment typically runs for three to five years.
Common SLIT products include Oralair and Ragwitek for pollen allergies. Your doctor will recommend a specific tablet based on what triggers your symptoms.
SLIT works best for people with mild to moderate allergies. If you have severe allergies or asthma that makes allergies worse, ask your doctor whether sublingual or injected immunotherapy might suit you better.
The most common side effect is itching or swelling in your mouth in the first few weeks. This usually settles down as your body adjusts.
